Arsenal go head-to-head against Sheffield Wednesday in the Capital One clash and today. With the foreknowledge that Petr Cech is starting in goal today, a thought coming up in every gooner’s head is Wenger’s preferred striker against Carlos Carvalhal’s men.
The battle all season long has been between Oliver Giroud and Theo Walcott; it appears the Frenchman has claimed back his spot from Walcott with his goal-scoring streak – usually off the bench and that’s why he is rested for today’s game since he was not in seen at the London Colney training facility yesterday.
Now who would Wenger select between Walcott and Joel Campbell? Personally, I would prefer to see Campbell man the striking position while Walcott can be deployed to the wing. The Costa Rican deserves a chance; if he cannot be given the opportunity to showcase his ability in a Capital One cup game then I do not see him going far in an Arsenal shirt.
Come on! The young man has almost played across all leagues in the world since he signed for Arsenal; for a player who has had loan spells at FC Lorient, Real Betis, Olympiacos and Villarreal and made his mark at Olympiacos during his stay there- because he was given a decent amount of playing time. His goal for them against Manchester United in the Champions League is still fresh in my memory.
For the fact that his national team features him regularly is enough proof that he deserves the chance to prove his worth. His stat on the goal chart is not quite impressive and that is because he is more like a team player who prefers to lay an assist when a teammate is in a better position rather than take a crack from distance. His four assists in a game for Olympiacos against OFI Crete adds more weight to this claim.
I think he should be given some playing time in the cup competitions to boost his self confidence for that is lacking really in the player. So here is saying the manager start him today, for the fans to see what he is capable of.
Elsewhere, Calum Chambers could partner with Mathieu Flamini tonight. The Boss once said he saw him as a Midfielder and it is left to be seen if the player would feature in that spot or stay in the defence where he has been ousted by Hector Bellerin.
